Lalith Ekanayake began his career as a wildlife photographer while at medical school. After receiving his early education at Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala, he graduated with an MBBS in 1985, having in 1982 become the first medical student to have enlisted in the armed services. While an acting sub-lieutenant in the navy he purchased his first camera and used the opportunities presented to him in postings at naval bases around the island to launch his career as a serious amateur wildlife photographer.
